The knights of the 2nd and 3rd crusade used it to cross the Danube on their way to the Holy Land.

Regensburg has many sigts to offer - chatedral, many gothic churches and also historical buildings like Golden Cross Inn where Charles V made the acquaintance of Barbara Blomberg, the mother of Don John of Austria (born 1547). The house is also the place where Kepler died in 1630.

Near Regensburg a must see are two classical buidings, erected by Ludwig I of Bavaria. Walhalla is a reproduction of Partenon build as a Teutonic temple of fame on the hill rising from Danube. Second is the Befreiungshalle at Kelheim, 30 km above Regensburg, a large circular building which has for its aim the glorification of the heroes of the 1813 War of Liberation.

To be continued...
Bread is actually one of the oldest foods on Earth. Pizza could be already known by Greeks, Romans, Etruscians, even Persians. Greeks baked flat, round breads spicing them up with oil and erbs.

Pizza Hut

In 18th century in Italy flat, round breads called "Pizzas" were sold in the streets. Queen Margherit in her inspection tour around Italy saw a lot of people
eating this flat bread. Courious, she summoned her guards and ordered
them to bring her some of the bread. She liked it so much that she eat
it very offten, casing concern in the court. Nevertheless, she summoned
Chef Rafaelle Esposito from his pizzeria to the royal palace. Rafaelle
decided to make a very special pizza for his queen. He topped the bread
with tomatoes, Mozarella Cheese and fresh basil (three colors of
italian flag). The queen loved it very much and also her popularity
among simle people increased. So was born Pizza Mrgherita, now famous
in the whole world.

Variations has been made in various parts of Italy, for example, in Bologna meat were added to topping.

After
World War II, pizza spread to America, France, Spain and England. While

First to cultivate potatoes were Inca indians in Peru in about 200 BC.
Among modern botanists there is an agreement that potatoe originated in
Andes. When in 1536 spanish conquistadors conquered Peru, they
discovered this vegetable and bring it back to Europe. Fisrt to
cultivate potatoe in Europe was Basque sailors.

Sir Walter
Raleigh introduced potatoes to Ireland in 1589 near Cork on the 40,000
acres of land given to him by Queen Elizabeth I in 1581.

French
scientist Antoine-Augustin Parmentier had a big influence of
popolarizing potatoes in Europe. He also created a feast where only
potatoe dishes were served.

Marie Antoinette wife of Louis XV was known to wear potato blossoms as a hair decoration.

French
Fries were introduced to the U.S. when Thomas Jefferson served them in
the White House during his Presidency of 1801-1809.

In October
1995, the potato became the first vegetable to be grown in space. NASA
and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, created the technology with
the goal of feeding astronauts on long space voyages, and eventually,
feeding future space colonies.

Wikipedia

Potato plants grow high to the ground and bear yellow to silver flowers with yellow stamens.

Peruvian
Cuisine naturally contains the potato as a primary ingredient in many
dishes, as around 3,000 varieties of this tuber are grown there. Some
of the more famous dishes include Papa a la huancaina, Papa rellena,
Ocopa, Carapulcra, Causa and Cau Cau among many others.

In
Britain potatoes form part of the traditional staple fish and chips.
Colcannon is a traditional Irish dish involving mashed potato combined
with shredded cabbage and onion. In Northern Europe, especially
Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, newly harvested, early ripening
varieties are considered a special delicacy. In Latvia we are eating
them with soar cream and dill wead. In Western Europe, especially in
Belgium, sliced potatoes are fried to get frieten, the original French
fried potatoes. In the United States, potatoes have become one of the
most widely consumed crops, and thus have a variety of preparation
methods and condiments.

The United Nations have officially
declared the year 2008 the International Year of the Potato in order to
"increase awareness of the importance of the potato as a food in
developing nations".

Some nice potatoe recepies:

Creamy Twice-Baked Potatoes
Oven-Crisped Potatoes
Baked Potato Salad I
Creamy Potato Casserole
Cheesy Potato Salad
Fluffy Potato Casserole
The story of Lighthouse of Alexandria is linked together with story of founding a city of Alexandria. Alexander the Great choosed very carefully cities location. He died before the city was completed and to finish it was Ptolemy.

Under the rule of Ptolemy city florished and soon needed not only a symbol but also entirely practical building to guide ships into harbour. So Ptolemy authorised construction of Pharos and twenty years later it was finished. Pharos of Alexandria was first lighthouse in the world. And pharos (the name of island it was constructed) became the rooth for word lighthouse.

The lighthouse seems to have been a great tourist attraction. It is not fully clear how it was destroyed, but probably, as for many ancient buildings, it was an earthquake.
